HSP Service Portfolio Overview

Haslam Scholars are required to design and revise annually a Service Portfolio that chronicles their experiences, reflections, and understanding of their service engagement throughout their four years of service to community schools. Service Portfolios capture not only the mode of service performed by the scholar but also what the scholar deduces about topics related to education, social justice, and social responsibility. Portfolios also contain a personal element, which captures the scholar’s thoughts, views, and personal development related to working within a community in addition to critically analyzing learned assumptions about privilege, oppression, and power.

Service Portfolios consist of an array of materials, resources, and individual contributions related to each scholar’s service, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Reflections of service experiences and participation in various community school activities
  • Personal mission and vision statements regarding the scholar’s participation and perspective of service
  • Essays completed in Service Dialogues
  • Lesson plans and materials created for clubs and service projects
  • Photographs of the scholar’s service experience
  • A profile and description of the community school site and service projects
  • Relevant news articles, and more.

Scholars will receive guidance from the Service Dialogue Facilitator on acceptable portfolio materials and will be given time during Service Dialogue meetings to discuss portfolio ideas. However, scholars are encouraged to be creative, intentional, and independent with their Service Portfolios so that the final project is most useful to their own personal and professional development.
