Fall Semester 2016

  • JREM: 175: Principles and History of Journalism and Media
    • Journalism 175 is an overview course of the different types of media, the history of each, and the impact of journalism and media on the world today. The class entails an out of class experience working with one of the media platforms on campus to gain a view of the media world.
  • ENGL: 198- Chancellor’s Honors Writing I
    • English 198 is for students who are a part of the Chancellor’s Honor Program. The course is described as “Intensive writing and research instruction, with emphasis on critical inquiry, rhetorical analysis, persuasion/argumentation, and primary and secondary research. Course topic includes exploration of debates concerning “human nature.” Includes the study of longer works of nonfiction in addition to a selection of interdisciplinary readings.”
  • PSYC: 117- Honors: General Psychology
    • Honors General Psychology 117 is a honors introductory course to psychology that reviews the basic understandings of the human mind, behaviors, and human nature.
  • GEOL: 103- The Earth’s Environments
    • Geology 103, The Earth’s Environments is a course that reviews the problems and solutions to human disturbance of the environment, The course goes over pollution and resource depletion of the environment, hazards of human disturbance of the environment that leads to climate change.
  • FYS: 129- Freedom Sings
    • FYS (First Year Studies) 129 Freedom Sings is a course that views the First Amendment rights of songs that have been banned or censored throughout history or has sounded a call for social change. The course entails listening to 15 songs, analyzing and discussing the lyrics and the impact on society.

Spring Semester 2017

  • JREM: 200: Media Writing
    • “Students will learn how to work in a professional media environment. They will learn basic forms of writing for all media. Students will also be introduced to basic grammar, style, structure, media practices and technology. Students are introduced to AP Style for print and broadcast.”
  • ENGL: 298: Chancellor’s Honors Writing II
    • “Intensive writing and research instruction to build upon English 198, with emphasis on strategies for conducting independent research, locating and evaluating information, using varied sources and research methods, developing positions based on evidence, and writing up research using appropriate conventions within different disciplines. Course topic includes exploration of debates concerning the pursuit of truth and knowledge within different disciplines.”
  • FREN: 112: Elementary French II
    • Introduction to Elementary French.
  • HIEU: 248: Honors: Development of Western Civilization 
    • 1715 to Present, a review of the history of Western Civilization.
  • ASTR: 151: Journey Through the Solar System 
    • “Study of Earth’s nearest astronomical neighbors, including the sun, planets, asteroids, and comets. Seasons, solar and lunar eclipses, motion of the planets in the night sky, recent planetary space probe discoveries, development of our modern understanding of the origin and evolution of our solar system and its place in the universe, discovery of extrasolar planets in distant solar systems. A minimum of mathematical analysis.”

  • JREM: 230: Multimedia Reporting
    • “Students will cover a variety of news topics and events and will report on these stories across media platforms. The course introduces students to general assignment, enterprise, and beat reporting using principles of journalistic ethics. A combination of photography, video, sound, and graphics will be used for in-depth storytelling.”
  • COMM: 247: Business and Professional Communication 
    • “Basic theory and principles of effective workplace communication.”
  • FREN: 211: Intermediate French I
    • Continuation of the learning the French language and culture to expand knowledge of language as to participate in discuss in French language and understand the written language as well.
  • MATH: 115: Statistical Reasoning
    • Introduction into statistical reasoning without using calculus.
  • ENG: 251: Introduction into Poetry
    • “Poetry as a distinct mode of artistic expression. Critical tools for perceptive reading of poems. Writing-emphasis course.”

  • CMST 487: Intercultural Communication
    • “In-depth survey of communication research topics. Topics rotate among health, interpersonal, and organizational/team communication.”
  • SABR: Study Abroad
  • HIST 1089: Australian History
    • “This unit introduces students to Australian history from the convict period to the present, examining frontier violence, the making of a nation state, and the manifold transformations of the twentieth century. Taking advantage of the university’s location, the unit uses Sydney-area museums and site visits to bring Australia’s past to life.”

  • ECON 207: Honors: Introduction to Economics
    • “Theory of consumer behavior, theory of firms, supply and demand, costs of production, market models, national income and employment theory, money and banking, monetary and fiscal policy, debt, and international economics.”
  • FREN 212: Intermediate French
    • Continuation of the beginner’s French class.
  • POLS 312: Popular Culture/ American Politics of the Sixties
    • “Popular culture related to American politics and government focusing on the role of film, television, fiction, music, drama, art, and sports. Writing-emphasis course.”
  • JREM 350: Digital News Reporting
    • “This course examines digital media as news platforms, including current issues, problems, and practices of online journalism. Additionally, students will learn how to use online communication tools, such as social media tools, blogging software, and visualization tools, to report on stories of local and national interest. “

    • “Principles and practice of photography as a creative tool of communication. Basic camera technique, digital photography, historical and contemporary photojournalism.”

  • JREM 333: Print and Web Editing
    • “Methods and practice in judging news, editing copy, writing headlines and designing newspapers and magazines. Emphasis on precise word use and news display. “
  • JREM 400: Mass Communication Law and Ethics
    • “Emphasis on legal issues affecting print and electronic media, including libel, privacy, copyright, free press-fair trial, governmental regulations of advertising, electronic media, and public relations. Also includes ethical standards and practices.”
  • JREM 414: Magazine/Feature Writing
    • “Techniques of writing features and in-depth articles for mass circulation and specialized magazines or newspapers. Organizing and presenting material with attention to problems in areas such as business, science, agriculture, and the humanities.”
  • JREM 466: Media, Diversity and Society
    • “This course examines theoretical approaches and practical issues regarding how social groups are represented in the mass media. Industry and alternative media efforts at addressing diversity are also explored.”
  • MATH 113: Mathematical Reasoning
    • “Classical and modern topics in number theory, logic, geometry, and probability with emphasis on problem solving. Consumer mathematics and other real-world applications.”

    • “Professional learning experience working part-time in a media-related enterprise. May be on or off campus. Students usually work 16-20 hours per week.”

    • “Critical tools for perceptive reading of play texts. Writing-emphasis course.”
  • ARTN 231: Non-Major Intro to Photography
    • “Introduction to the art of photography. Taking and processing of photographs through both traditional film/darkroom and digital.”

    • “Introduction to yoga and various forms of relaxation with the majority of class time spent learning and refining the postures.”

  • JREM 490: Advanced Photojournalism
    • “Advanced principles and methods of black-and-white photography. Introduction to color photography. News and feature photographs, photo essays.”
  • JREM 499: Enterprise and Leadership in Media
    • “Exposes students to broad media management and leadership issues, helps students understand the importance of the business side of media. Provides an overview of the future of journalism and media.”
  • JREM 493: Independent Study — News21
    • “The national News21 Initiative is part of an effort on the part of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York to change the way journalism is taught in the U.S. and train a new generation of journalists capable of reshaping the news industry.”
    • “Students selected for the program participate – some of them via videoconference – in an intensive seminar in the spring semester of each year during which they research and hear from experts on a topic that will become the basis of a national investigation. The students then move into paid summer fellowships, during which they work out of the Cronkite School’s digital media complex in downtown Phoenix for 10 weeks in the summer. The fellows travel the country and sometimes go abroad to report stories and produce content for publication or broadcast across a number of platforms.”
