For my thesis project for the Chancellor’s Honors Program, I created a business plan for a nonprofit organization that I hope to launch one day in Nashville. The organization is named C.H.I.P., which stands for Children of Incarcerated Parents. My inspiration for this project came from my own experience with the criminal justice and prisons systems. My biological father, along with several other close family members, have been incarcerated during my lifetime. Having not only my father but a cousin, grandparent, and uncle in prison has significantly impacted me. By launching CHIP, I hope to keep parents and kids connected during their sentence as well as minimize the adverse effects that incarceration has on children and teens.
